    Herodotean Kings and Historical Inquiry.Matthew R. Christ - 1994 - Classical Antiquity 13 (2):167-202.
This article seeks evidence of Herodotus's conception of his historical enterprise in the recurring scenes in which he portrays barbarian kings as inquirers and investigators. Through these scenes-involving most notably Psammetichus, Etearchus, Croesus, Cyrus, Cambyses, Darius, and Xerxes-the historian not only explores the character of autocrats, but also holds up a mirror to his own activity as inquirer. Once we recognize the metahistorical dimension of Herodotus's representation of inquiring kings, we can better understand the scenes in which these figures appear (...)

Paths to Reducing Medical Injury: Professional Liability and Discipline vs. Patient Safety — And the Need for a Third Way.Randall R. Bovbjerg, Robert H. Miller & David W. Shapiro - 2001 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 29 (3-4):369-380.
Too many patients are injured in the course of care. Clinicians may mistakenly cause new harm to a patient or fail to take established steps to improve the presenting condition. Medical institutions within which they work may lack mechanisms to reduce errors or prevent them from harming patients. Many, perhaps even most, injuries are preventable, probably numbering in the hundreds of thousands a year for hospital care alone. Long ignored by medical practitioners and health-care payers and little appreciated by the (...)

(1 other version)Justice, instruction, and the good: The case for public education in Aristotle and Plato's Laws.Randall R. Curren - 1993 - Studies in Philosophy and Education 11 (4):293-311.
This paper develops an interpretation and analysis of the arguments for public education which open Book VIII of Aristotle's Politics, drawing on both the wider Aristotelian corpus and on examination of continuities with Plato's Laws. Part I: The paper opens with the question of why Aristotle would say that no one will doubt that education should be the concern of the legislator, and Sections I–III identify the nature of his enterprise in the Politics, the audience he wishes to address, the (...)

Chaucer and Boccaccio: Antiquity and Modernity.R. Edwards - 2001 - Springer.
In the late Middle Ages, Chaucer invents two imaginative domains crucial to his culture and to our understanding of the emergence of selfhood, subjectivity and social arrangements; antiquity and late-medieval modernity. Edwards demonstrates in this study how this was the result of Chaucer's reading and re-writing of the works of Boccaccio, which provide sources and models for portraying the classical past and medieval modernity. In so doing, Edwards provides us with a valuable way of assessing Chaucer's analysis of late medieval (...)
